Introduction

On Friday April 11, 2025, Liam Modlin will deliver a half-day workshop on the research and experimental use of psychedelics in the treatment of mental health conditions.

Workshop Outline

This workshop will provide mental healthcare professionals with an introduction to the experimental use of psychedelics for the treatment of psychiatric conditions in research settings, including depression and PTSD. Mental health providers will learn about the types of compounds being researched, their proposed indications, potential benefits, and their associated risks and side effects. Through a trauma-informed lens, providers will also learn about the key clinical principles and practices utilized across psychedelic clinical trials. This training will equip providers with the foundational knowledge and understanding necessary to navigate the evolving landscape of psychedelic research and its potential implications for clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will learn to:

  • Identify and describe a range of psychedelic compounds currently under research, including their basic mechanisms of action and common subjective effects.

  • Recognize specific psychiatric conditions being investigated for psychedelic therapy and articulate the various treatment models and protocols used in clinical trials.

  • Understand the potential therapeutic benefits of psychedelics while critically evaluating the associated risks, side effects, and contraindications to promote safe application in clinical research settings.

  • Apply key clinical principles of psychedelic therapy, including effective preparation, psychological support during treatment sessions, and methods for facilitating emotional processing and integrating insights after treatment.
